The Philadelphia Eagles have taken a significant step to bolster their offensive line by signing Mekhi Becton, a player well-regarded for his versatility. Originally brought in as a swing tackle, Becton was expected to provide depth behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. However, recent developments have quickly altered his role within the team.
Steen's Injury Creates Opportunity
Tyler Steen's unexpected ankle injury has left the Eagles with a vacancy at the starting right guard position. As a result, Becton has swiftly moved into this role. During his first practice with the first team, he lined up as the right guard and made an immediate impact, successfully neutralizing Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills.
This transition hasn't gone unnoticed by the Eagles' coaching staff. Head Coach Nick Sirianni expressed his optimism about Becton’s performance and potential. "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," said Sirianni.
Becton's Involvement and Adaptability
Although Becton did not participate in the first few days of training camp, he remained actively engaged. Observers noted his attentiveness and willingness to learn from his teammates during this period. His efforts did not go unnoticed by his fellow linemen. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton commented.
Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, has also praised Becton for his adaptability and contributions during practices. “I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?” Dickerson remarked. This flexibility is a crucial asset for any NFL team, and Becton has showcased his ability to play multiple positions effectively.
Addition to the Second Team Offensive Line
Even as he steps into the role of starting right guard, Becton continues to be a valuable asset for the Eagles' second-team offensive line. His capability to play both guard spots and tackle positions offers the team significant strategic advantages. Dickerson emphasized this versatility, stating, "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."
The Eagles have yet to disclose the duration of Tyler Steen's absence, raising questions about how long Becton will need to fill in as the starting right guard. However, Becton remains unfazed by the uncertainty. "I know I'm not, like that wasn’t the thing when they signed me here. I don’t have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he said, highlighting his readiness and determination.
As the Eagles navigate the challenges of the training camp and prepare for the upcoming season, Becton's presence and performance will be critical. His ability to seamlessly transition between different offensive line positions underlines his value to the team. Whether serving as a starter or providing depth, Becton has shown that he is more than capable of stepping up when called upon, offering a promising outlook for the Eagles' offensive line this season.
