Mekhi Becton Adjusts to New Role with the Eagles
In a move that surprised many, Mekhi Becton signed with the Philadelphia Eagles this past May. Once projected as a cornerstone tackle during his tumultuous time with the New York Jets, Becton now finds himself navigating a new landscape in Philadelphia, marked by both changes and opportunities.
Initially joining the Eagles as a tactical backup for Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton was slated to fill in at tackle positions when necessary. However, the trajectory of his role changed as team strategy evolved. The Eagles soon charted a different course for Becton, envisioning him as a vital component at guard.
Transitioning to guard is no small feat, especially for a player accustomed to the dynamics of tackle. “Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away,” Becton explained, highlighting the instinctive nature demanded by his new position.
His quarterback-like adjustment at the mandatory minicamp paid dividends for the team. With Landon Dickerson absent for personal reasons, compounded by a subsequent lacerated toe injury, Becton capably filled the gap at left guard. The Eagles' coaching staff couldn't help but notice Becton's adaptability and burgeoning potential in this interior role.
As training camp kicks into gear, Becton is not just settling in but actively competing. He's vying with Tyler Steen for the starting right guard spot, an effort underpinned by his relentless drive: “If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready,” he states with a sense of unwavering readiness.
With the preseason around the corner, all eyes are on Becton to see how he fares against live competition. His imposing arm length, an advantage he has over most defensive tackles, could become a significant asset. “I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that,” Becton noted, displaying both his confidence and his analytical mindset.
Becton's journey with the Eagles thus far has been one of learning and resilience. His tenure with the Jets was marred by injuries and inconsistent play, a chapter he seems intent on closing. “I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do,” Becton remarks, emphasizing his commitment to growth and adaptation.
Throughout these changes, Becton's attitude remains remarkably positive and pragmatic. “I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready,” he asserts, showing his readiness to contribute whenever and however needed.
The weeks ahead will be critical for Becton as he continues to define his role within the team. The training camp and preseason games present an arena for him to validate his fit and effectiveness in the Eagles' offensive line. “I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever,” Becton concludes, encapsulating the blend of preparation and unpredictability that defines his current journey.
Philadelphia Eagles fans and coaching staff alike are watching closely, hopeful that Becton will not only adapt but thrive. His move to guard represents more than a positional change; it is a testament to his determination to redefine his NFL career.
