Jason Wright to Transition from Commanders' President Role After 2024 Season
Jason Wright, who has been a transformative figure for the Washington Commanders since 2020, will be stepping down from his current role as team president following the 2024 season. However, Wright will not be parting ways with the organization entirely. He will assume a new position as a senior adviser with a primary focus on ensuring the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal. His tenure has been marked by significant leadership and pivotal changes, cementing his legacy within the organization.
Wright took the reins of the franchise during a time of considerable upheaval. Joining in 2020 when the team was known as the Washington Football Team, Wright oversaw a comprehensive rebranding process, which culminated in the unveiling of the Washington Commanders identity in 2022. Under his guidance, the organization navigated through a series of challenges, including a complete change in ownership from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris.
Reflecting on his tenure, Wright expressed immense pride in the accomplishments achieved over the past four years. "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years," Wright stated. "Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it. We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership."
Wright's leadership has not only been pivotal for the Commanders' internal transformations but also played a significant role in reconnecting with fans and the wider community. "Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community," Wright noted. "Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization."
In addition to his accomplishments with the Commanders, Wright also holds the historic distinction of being the first Black president of an NFL team. Moreover, he is only the fourth former player to assume the role of team president in the league. His unique perspective as both a former player and an executive has undoubtedly contributed to his effectiveness in the role.
As the Commanders prepare for this transition, Wright is already setting his sights on completing the current stadium project, a significant milestone for the franchise's future. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," Wright confirmed.
Looking forward, Wright is eager to explore new leadership opportunities. He has been identified as a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers, underscoring the high regard in which his leadership skills are held within the NFL community. "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold," he stated.
The Commanders face a momentous period ahead, with their new stadium project and the continued evolution of the franchise under new ownership. Wright's transition marks the end of a significant chapter, but his ongoing advisory role and the foundations laid during his tenure promise to provide robust support for the team's future ambitions.
As the NFL and its fans look on, Wright's next steps will undoubtedly be watched with keen interest, his journey a testament to the impact that dedicated and visionary leadership can have on a storied sports franchise.
