Adapting to Change: Mazi Smith's Journey with the Dallas Cowboys
In his rookie year with the Dallas Cowboys, Mazi Smith navigated a season of adaptation and tireless effort. The former Michigan standout, who played all 17 regular-season games in his inaugural season, battled through physical transformations and on-field challenges to find his footing in the NFL.
Smith's stats from the 2023 season reflect his hustle: 13 tackles, one sack, eight quarterback pressures, and three tackles for loss. However, his limited role in the NFC wild card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, where he logged just four snaps, underscored areas for potential growth and adjustment.
When Smith arrived at the 2023 NFL Combine, he tipped the scales at 323 pounds, a notable drop from his 337-pound frame during his college career at Michigan. But, in an effort to adapt to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn's scheme, Smith further reduced his weight to under 300 pounds. This significant weight loss aimed to mold him into a more agile player suited for an attacking three-technique role.
Zimmer Brings Change
The offseason brought a significant shift with the arrival of Mike Zimmer as the new defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. Zimmer has clear plans for Smith, aiming to restore his weight to a more substantial playing level and focusing on the fundamentals. "Zimmer noted Smith lost a lot of weight when he joined the Cowboys and struggled last year," Zimmer acknowledged. "Zimmer's plan is for Smith to play blocks more and use his hands and footwork correctly."
Smith, himself, has embraced this direction, recognizing the need for a more substantial build. "I did everything I was supposed to do and did nothing but train. Everything in my power. Control the controllables. In this scheme, I don't want to be 290. Probably want to be like 310-315. See what that's doing for you. If you have to go up [more in weight], go up," Smith explained.
Smith’s Versatility
Smith's versatility remains a key asset as he progresses into his second NFL season. Reflecting on his college career and initial NFL experiences, Smith noted, "My whole career I've been a guy who could play in multiple schemes. I got the athletic traits to be an up-field guy, but I have the strength to play at the line of scrimmage and build a wall."
This adaptability lies at the heart of Zimmer’s renewed strategy. "He was trying to be an attacking three-technique to get up the field... Obviously, he was a high draft pick. I heard that he kind of struggled last year, so we're gonna start with the basics. Get him in a good stance, get him using his hands the right way, getting his footwork the right way and then go from there," Zimmer elaborated.
Leadership and Expectations
Within the Cowboys’ ranks, expectations for Smith are both high and unequivocal. Team leader Micah Parsons voiced his confidence and expectations plainly. "It's not what I think he can be, it's what Mazi has to be. When you get to this business, there is no more of a choice or a can: it's either you will or you won't... We drafted him to be in the game. That's how much confidence I have."
Parsons is not alone in his belief in Smith's potential. This shared confidence underscores the supportive environment surrounding Smith as he embarks on the next phase of his NFL career. "That's why I'm in his corner, I'm rooting for him and hoping to get him better every day... We need Mazi to be that great force. He can be a dominant player. It's just a will and mindset," Parsons affirmatively stated.
An Evolving Story
Smith's narrative is one of adaptation, resilience, and aspiration. As he prepares to adjust his weight and acclimate to Zimmer's new scheme, Smith remains focused on maximizing his potential. "I kind of go over there with a clean slate. I want to write my story. I don't really set goals. Everybody want to be an All-Pro. Everybody want to be top five. I want to be the best me I can be," Smith said.
The upcoming season will reveal how Smith's journey unfolds, marked by his dedication to both physical and technical growth. His ability to adapt and the organization’s strategic adjustments will be key factors in determining his impact on the Cowboys' defense. As Smith continues to refine his skills and build his physical repertoire, the Dallas fanbase and coaching staff look forward to seeing tangible results on the gridiron.
