Kiyan Anthony: A Rising Star on His Own Terms
Kiyan Anthony, a name that is rapidly gaining recognition in the high school basketball scene, stands tall at 6-foot-5 and has proven himself to be a formidable presence on the court. As a four-star recruit and the No. 36 prospect in the 2025 rankings, Anthony’s trajectory indicates a promising future in the sport. Currently attending Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, New York, he continues to capture the attention of scouts and fans alike.
But Kiyan is more than just another young talent; he is the son of NBA veteran Carmelo Anthony. Carmelo, who famously led Syracuse to the 2003 national championship as a freshman and has since contributed significantly to the university’s basketball facility, has undeniably left big shoes to fill. However, Kiyan is determined to make his own path. In conversation, he elaborates on his father’s approach to his burgeoning career: “My father never pushes me to go to Syracuse just because his name is on the gym. He did so much at Syracuse. He knows that I'm my own person. I've just got to make my own decision at the end of the day.”
This sense of independence is a recurring theme for Kiyan, who has listed several potential colleges, including Auburn, USC, Florida State, Ohio State, Rutgers, and Syracuse. Reflecting on the process, he shares, “Even though I know basically the whole world wants me to go to Syracuse, I still haven't made the decision yet and I still have to talk to the coaches some more and really get into detail -- like what other players are coming, how they want me to play, how I'll be coached and stuff like that.”
Kiyan’s outlook on his future is mature and well-rounded, a mindset cultivated by both of his parents. While the public often associates his achievements with his high-profile father, Kiyan acknowledges the integral role his mother has played in his journey. “I would say everybody sees when the cameras are on [my dad] and then they're on me because I'm playing good, but I would say my mom does a lot more background stuff,” Kiyan said, adding, “Like, when I'm going through something or I need somebody to talk to, my mom is definitely the person.”
His mother’s influence extends beyond emotional support, also encompassing academic and athletic discipline. “And she's the one who really pushes me to get in the gym, even if I don't want to,” Kiyan noted. “To go to school and stay on top of my grades and stuff like that.” Such grounding influences have helped Kiyan maintain a balanced perspective on his career and future.
Despite the pressures and expectations, Kiyan remains focused on making a decision that best fits his aspirations and personal growth. “So I still have to finish up my visits, and then, ultimately, just make a decision. I will rely on my parents a lot with their advice and how they think a school fits me,” he shared. This thoughtful approach underscores his desire to navigate his path independently while valuing the guidance of those close to him.
Furthermore, Kiyan’s sense of camaraderie extends to his friends, as he seeks to uplift those around him. “My friends maybe not having the same opportunities as I have, I'm the one that's tried to bring them along with me,” he explained, revealing a depth of character that resonates both on and off the court. “I don't want to make them feel left out.”
One of Kiyan’s notable performances came in April when he scored 15 points at the iconic Rucker Park, showcasing his burgeoning talent to a wider audience. Yet, despite the growing attention, he remains unpretentious about his potential collegiate destination. “If it is Syracuse -- I go there a lot and I practice, I work out there -- if it is that, that's what it is,” he offered, emphasizing that the final decision will be his own. “But he's never going to say, 'You gotta go to Syracuse. You gotta go there because I went there.' He's not going to make me follow in his footsteps unless I really want to.”
As Kiyan Anthony continues to carve out his niche in high school basketball, his journey exemplifies the balance between legacy and autonomy. Supported by a family that values both heritage and individuality, Kiyan is poised to make thoughtful decisions that align with his unique ambitions and potential. The basketball community watches with keen interest, eager to see where his talent and determination will lead him next.
