Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List
The Los Angeles Dodgers have once again placed Walker Buehler on the injured list, this time due to right hip inflammation. This setback is particularly disheartening for both fans and Buehler himself, who has struggled to regain his pre-injury form after missing most of 2022 and all of 2023 following a second Tommy John surgery.
During his peak years from 2018 to 2021, Buehler was a cornerstone of the Dodgers' rotation, winning 39 games and maintaining an ERA never above 3.44. However, his recent performances have not mirrored those prolific seasons.
2024 Struggles After Comeback
Since making his return on May 8, 2024, Buehler has posted a troubling 1-4 record with a 5.84 ERA in eight starts. His latest appearance in Colorado further showcased his struggles; after taking a line drive off the hip, he remained in the game but ultimately surrendered seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs. Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts noted that Buehler's hip had been sore for several starts, leading to the decision to place him on the injured list.
"I think [he's] a little bit sort of finding himself again. I think he's still in search mode. So, as he's getting back to health, I think for the mind and some clarity, I think this will be a good thing," Roberts stated. The team is hopeful that time off will allow Buehler to regroup both physically and mentally.
Buehler himself expressed his feelings, saying, "It sucks to feel kind of invaluable, or like you're hampering your team. At the end of the day, we really like our team and want to be ready for the end of the year. And I'm going to do whatever I need to do to feel like I can help our team at the end of the year, and do everything in my power to be valuable enough to be on those rosters."
Bobby Miller Activated
In a corresponding move, the Dodgers have activated Bobby Miller, who has not pitched since April 10 due to right shoulder inflammation. Despite his absence, Miller has shown promise in his second major league season, boasting a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in three starts this year.
Miller had an impressive rookie year in 2023, and his return adds much-needed depth to a Dodgers pitching staff that has been plagued by injuries. His performance will be crucial as the team navigates the ongoing season without their ace, Buehler.
Looking Forward
Despite his recent struggles, Buehler’s career statistics remain notable. Over seven seasons, he has accrued a 47-20 record and posted a commendable 3.17 ERA. The Dodgers remain hopeful that rest and recovery will help Buehler return to his top form.
Injuries are an inevitable part of Major League Baseball, and the Dodgers have continually demonstrated their depth and flexibility. Bobby Miller stepping up in Buehler’s absence is a testament to this resilience. As the team adapts to these challenges, all eyes will be on Buehler’s recovery and eventual return.
